National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service:

  • To access information by telephone: call 1-800-4-CANCER
  • To access information by your fax machine:
CancerFax is a quick and easy way to obtain recommended treatment guidelines from the NCI's Physician Data Query (PDQ) system. All you need is access to a fax machine. CancerFax operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the call to the CancerFax computer is toll-free.

How do I use CancerFax?

  1. Select the 6-digit code number from the Contents List below
  2. Pick up the telephone receiver on your fax machine and dial 1-301-624-2511
  3. The CancerFax voice will prompt you to enter the code number you want. Enter the full 6-digit number, then hit the # key. If you make a mistake, hit the * key, then reenter the code number.
  4. The CancerFax voice will tell you which information you have selected, the number of pages that will be faxed to you, and the last date this information was updated. You can cancel the request at this point if you change your mind.
  5. When the CancerFax voice prompts you, press the START/COPY or RECEIVE button on your fax machine (this is usually a green button), and hang up the telephone.
